Being called an epidemic, rising obesity in the U.S. is putting a significant strain on the already troubled heath care system. Obesity costs Americans $147 billion annually and makes up approximately 10 percent of the total cost of health care.
The first conference on obesity control and prevention, attended by health educators, policy analysts, epidemiologists, dietitians, etc., and sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls at a time when the ordinary American packs an extra 23 pounds and the country, collectively, is close to 4.6 billion pounds overweight.
Obesity is specified as being 20% above normal body weight. About 72 million Americans, or one third of the adult population is considered obese.
Experts agree that inactivity and poor eating habits contribute to obesity. While national guidelines recommend 150 minutes of physical activity each week for elementary children and 225 minutes for older children, only Illinois has a statewide requirement for daily physical education.
Nearly one-third of U.S. Children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food every day, resulting in approximately six extra pounds per year, per child. Fast food consumption has increased fivefold among children since 1970.

We at Standing Proud have dedicated our efforts into creating a very worthy organization to better the lives of children around the world. We specifically target three areas, Health, Wellness and Fitness.
Many of today’s youth have fallen victims to the global epidemic of sedentary lifestyles that lead to an array of health problems such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Many of these children come from very modest means and lack the motivation to become active in their communities either through organized sports and activities and furthermore, lack the parental guidance to nurture and motivate them to take part.
We are a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes in a child’s home, school and after school activities. The funding to operate Standing Proud will come from generous donations, fundraising efforts, applying for government grants and private foundations. All donations are tax deductible. We appreciate your time, interest and donations!
